DUNBAR, W.Va. (AP) — A West Virginia city’s former accountant is facing charges of embezzling more than $200,000 from the local government over about two years.

According to the Charleston Gazette-Mail , 39-year-old Reneda Lynn Welch of Hamlin is charged with one embezzlement count in the Kanawha County Magistrate Court criminal complaint.

State Auditor J.B. McCuskey said Friday that Welch hid city money for personal use in “ghost accounts.”

In the complaint, Kanawha County Sheriff’s Detective J.A. Payne said the investigation began in September 2016. Payne said Welch confessed that she took up to $2,000, but later said it could exceed $10,000.

In the complaint, Payne said the state auditor’s office identified about $203,000 missing.

Dunbar city officials couldn’t be reached for comment Friday.

Court records show Welch was free on bail Friday.
