SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Navy sailors who will serve aboard the USS South Dakota have gotten a taste of the state for which the ship is named.

The sailors visiting from their base camp in Connecticut toured the state last week and hunted pheasants this weekend during the Governor’s Hunt.

Chief Petty Officer Kyle Fontenot tells KELO-TV it was great to experience the culture of South Dakota. The USS South Dakota Commissioning Committee hosted the four sailors during their trip.

Two sailors from South Dakota will also be aboard the ship along with the four who visited the Mount Rushmore state. They plan to be the first ones to board the ship and take it out to sea next summer.
