PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) — The Virginia Education Association is holding a symposium aimed at encouraging the recruitment and retention of male teachers, particularly men of color.
The “Underrepresented Male Educators Symposium” is scheduled for Saturday at Virginia State University in Petersburg.
VEA President Jim Livingston said the symposium will spotlight barriers and also share examples of programs that are successfully recruiting male teachers and diverse teachers.
The keynote speaker is Dr. Robert W. Simmons III, president of the Service Year Alliance and the author of more than 40 books and articles. His areas of research include minority teachers and the experience of African American boys in public schools. Other speakers will include Toney McNair, Virginia’s Teacher of the Year in 2016.
