WEST HAVEN, Vt. (AP) — Officials at a Vermont racetrack say a driver apparently went into cardiac arrest and died while driving on the track.

The Devil’s Bowl Speedway in West Haven says 62-year-old Terry Stevenson had just completed five laps of a race when his car drifted into a retaining wall. The Burlington Free Press reports the Whitehall, New York man was found unresponsive in the vehicle and was later pronounced dead on arrival at an area hospital.

Stevenson’s race on Sunday was his first in more than 20 years. He had won a championship at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in 1993 and had competed at other tracks.

Stevenson’s son Dustin said Tuesday that his father truly loved racing.
