COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Prosecutors say they won’t charge a man with a fatal shooting last spring in a South Carolina park.

Solicitor Dan Johnson decided that 23-year-old Gene Morris Jr. was threatened and trying to protect himself when he killed 37-year-old Laron Martin in Columbia’s downtown Finlay Park in May.

Morris told investigators he went to the park after getting a call from a woman saying she was being harassed by Martin.

Morris left the park after the shooting and was arrested later and charged with illegal possession of a gun because he didn’t have a concealed weapons permit.

The State newspaper reports Morris pleaded guilty to that charge and was sentenced under the Youthful Offender Act to a year of probation.
