BALTIMORE (AP) — Funding for Baltimore city schools will now be largely influenced by student poverty levels instead of standardized test scores.
The Baltimore Sun reports the city school board voted Tuesday to approve a change that amends the district’s old “fair student funding” model.
That model offered a set dollar amount per student mainly based on test scores, but not just good performance.
Alison Perkins-Cohen, the chief of staff for schools CEO, says the district believes it may prevent schools from losing money with the new plan by drawing from state revenue.

Teachers Union President Marietta English says the board didn’t consider factors such as how state policy changes may affect funding before voting.
The new model allocates about $3 million to ensure schools can afford basic services, including student-teacher ratio maintenance.
