PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A Portland middle school teacher has been placed on leave because of his involvement in a student walkout last month.

Dave Northfield of Portland Public Schools says Chris Riser was placed on leave Friday. The Oregonian/OregonLive reports a petition to reinstate him had more than 1,300 signatures as of Sunday night.

Riser teaches at Ockley Green Middle School. Roughly 100 students walked out Feb. 9 to protest the death of 17-year-old Quanice Hayes, an armed robbery suspect fatally shot by police a year earlier.

In a message to parents, principal Paula McCullough said students were directed to walk in the street as well as lie down in a busy intersection as part of a die-in. She said the district supports student activism, but has “zero tolerance” for students being placed in unsafe conditions.
