PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A popular Providence theater is closing after 42 years in business.

The Rhode Island School of Design confirmed Thursday the Cable Car Cinema and Café is closing. RISD owns the building that houses the theater. School spokeswoman Jaime Marland said the theater had declined an offer for lower rent.

Cable Car owners Daniel Kamil and Emily Steffian said in a Facebook post they couldn’t work out an agreement that made financial sense and satisfied their “institutional needs.” The couple added that they will continue working with the Providence Art & Design Film Festival.

The Cable Car has offered independent and foreign film screenings since opening in 1976. Kamil and Steffian bought the theater in 2008.

The theater’s last day will be May 27.
