SAN ANTONIO (AP) — The San Antonio Police Department Chief says numerous sex crime cases reported to the department weren’t properly investigated.

The San Antonio Express-News reports that an internal audit of the cases assigned to the department’s Special Victims Unit revealed the mishandling. The department’s Internal Affairs division further investigated the situation.

Chief William McManus says disciplinary actions will be taken against officers involved. He says a lieutenant and two sergeants were transferred out of the unit for failing to properly supervise it.

McManus says the department aims to investigate all reported crimes and assist victims. He says the investigation will continue until the department is certain all cases have been properly handled.

City attorneys also plan to conduct a review of all cases the unit handles.
