INMAN, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a South Carolina man killed his girlfriend after an argument about driving to the store, then returned to the scene after police arrived.

Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Lt. Kevin Bobo said officers were already looking for 38-year-old Lance Brewton because a witness told them he was the shooter.

Bobo said in a statement that when Brewton drove past the scene again after the 11 a.m. shooting in Inman, state troopers and others chased him until he wrecked several miles away.

A police report says 24-year-old Natalie Niemitalo died a short time later. The report says Niemitalo and Brewton got into an argument about driving to the store when Brewton shot his girlfriend.

Brewton is charged with murder. It wasn’t known if he had a lawyer.
