BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — An arborist says many trees at a heavily wooded park in downtown Burlington, Vermont, are in serious decline, but some residents worry that cutting them down will destroy the area’s character.

The Burlington Free Press reports that a plan to redesign City Hall Park would remove about half its trees. City arborist V.J. Comai says many are unhealthy and “on their way out.”

At a meeting last week, some residents blamed the city for the condition of the trees, saying it had failed to tend to them over the years.

The citizen-led Development Review Board is expected to consider the redesign at its March 7 meeting. If approved, construction could begin in 2019.
