WAVERLY, Neb. (AP) — A southeast Nebraska woman has been accused of smothering her 3-week-old son by rolling atop him while they slept in the same bed.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office says 35-year-old Ashley Bean surrendered Wednesday in Lincoln. Capt. Ben Houchin says he expects Bean will be charged with felony child abuse. Court records don’t list the name of an attorney who could comment for her.

A sheriff’s office news release says deputies and medics were called to her Waverly home Dec. 17. The boy was taken to a Lincoln hospital and then transferred to an Omaha hospital, where he died later that day. An autopsy determined he’d died of asphyxia stemming from suffocation and overlay.

The release says investigators determined Bean was highly intoxicated when she fell asleep in the bed with her son.
