GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi Gulf Coast city is receiving a $2.6 million federal grant to construct a pedestrian and bus bridge over a major highway.
The Federal Transit Administration announced the grant Thursday. It will partially pay for the projected $9.8 million cost of the bridge in Gulfport.
The 1,100-foot (340-meter) bridge will stretch across U.S. 90 to connect the Coast Transit Authority’s transit center to Jones Park and the under-construction Mississippi Aquarium. The bridge will be accessible to pedestrians and buses.
U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker, a Republican, says the bridge is a “key expansion in the city’s transit infrastructure” and will attract tourists and businesses to the state’s second largest city.
