FARMINGTON, Utah (AP) — A man convicted of stabbing his girlfriend in 2008 was also convicted of burning down her northern Utah home about a week before her death.
The Deseret News reports 42-year-old Gutberto Heras-Corrales on Thursday was sentenced to a year in jail after pleading guilty to felony simple assault.
Heras-Corrales was initially charged with aggravated arson for setting fire to the Layton home, but the charged was reduced as part of a plea agreement.
A jury found Heras-Corrales guilty of murder in November for the death of 26-year-old Noemi Rodriguez. He was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.

Police say Heras-Corrales fled to Mexico after killing Rodriquez. Mexican authorities arrested him in January 2013, and he was extradited to Utah in July 2015.
