BURLINGTON, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey man accused of fleeing a crash of a vehicle into the Delaware River that claimed the life of his girlfriend broke down at a court hearing at which he was held for trial.

NJ.com reports that 24-year-old Jacob Garrett was only in the Burlington County courtroom for a few minutes Tuesday before he broke down, swearing and yelling that he couldn’t “do this.” Judge Thomas Kelly allowed him to leave the courtroom, then ordered him held pending trial.

Authorities said Garrett escaped from the car that went into the icy river Jan. 14 but 23-year-old Stephanie White died.

Defense attorney John Keesler sought his client’s release with conditions including substance and mental health assessment, saying there were concerns about Garrett’s mental health status even before the hearing.
