WASHINGTON (AP) — A Washington, D.C., man received two life sentences for raping and sexually assaulting a woman at knifepoint aboard a moving train in 2016.

News outlets report 41-year-old John P. Hicks was sentenced Friday after being convicted of first-degree rape and first-degree sex offense.

The victim told jurors she boarded the train after her overnight nursing job and awoke to find Hicks as the only other occupant of the train car.

Hicks engaged her in conversation but pulled out a knife and forced her to the back of the train, where he made her perform sex acts. Prosecutors say investigators traced DNA found at the scene to Hicks.

Hicks apologized before his sentencing and said he hopes the victim can one day move on with her life.
