CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) — A man is charged with stealing and wrecking a police car on Long Island.

Newsday says 20-year-old Tayawon Anderson of Bayport, New York, was scheduled for a court appearance Wednesday in Central Islip (EYE’-slihp). There was no immediate information on an attorney who could comment on his behalf.

Suffolk County police say an officer had left the keys in the ignition during a foot chase in Bay Shore when the defendant hopped in and drove away. The marked police car crashed in the woods about two miles away.

Police say Anderson has connections to the Crips but the theft is not believed to be gang-related.
