ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Deputies in North Carolina have charged a man with second-degree murder for supplying another man with a fatal overdose of fentanyl.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reports the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office said 44-year-old Kevin Mack Shepherd of Asheville was connected to the November death of 30-year-old Jared Runyon.
John Thomas, agent in charge of the Buncombe County Anti-Crime Task Force, said the arrest was the first time in recent memory that the sheriff’s office brought second-degree murder charges against a suspected drug dealer connected to an overdose death.
Shepherd was already in custody at the Buncombe County jail on a misdemeanor larceny charge when he was arrested last week on the murder charge. His secured bond was raised to $313,000. It’s not known if he has an attorney.
