PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Mainers are being encouraged to turn in unused, expired and unwanted prescription drugs during the national drug take back day.

Drug Enforcement Administration Acting Administrator Robert Patterson says disposing of leftover painkillers is “one of the best ways to prevent a member of your family from becoming a victim of the opioid epidemic.”

The event is being held Saturday at locations across Maine, from York to Winslow to Caribou.

Maine is struggling with an epidemic of prescription narcotics, heroin and fentanyl.

During the last drug take back day, Maine collected more than 24,000 pounds of prescription drugs.
