WOBURN, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts man charged with fatally stabbing an 18-year-old woman during a botched drug deal has been sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.

The Lowell Sun reports that 26-year-old David Benitez was sentenced Wednesday in Middlesex Superior Court, a week after he was convicted of manslaughter in the November 2014 death of Charlena Ngeth during a fight on a Lowell street.

Prosecutors say Ngeth and three friends arranged to buy marijuana from Benitez and another man, but then attempted to take it by force. During the ensuing fight, Benitez, of Lawrence, pulled a knife and stabbed Ngeth in the back.

Benitez’s lawyer sought a much more lenient sentence, saying the stabbing was a clear case of self-defense. She plans an appeal.

Benitez apologized to Ngeth’s family in court.
