PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island Democratic House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello is required to repay funds misused during his re-election bid.

The state’s Board of Elections decided Tuesday to order Mattiello to pay over $72,000 in misappropriated campaign funds. His former campaign aides are also connected to a controversial mailer that said a former Republican political candidate endorsed him over his opponent, Republican Steven Frias. Mattiello won the race on mail ballots by just 85 votes.

WPRI-TV reports a leadership PAC, run by Mattiello, had spent thousands of dollars more than allowed during the campaign. Another complaint filed with the elections board alleges the PAC failed to report expenses that represented in-kind donations to campaigns, notably Mattiello’s. The Rhode Island Republican Party is calling on Mattiello to step down.
