CORCORAN, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a prison guard attacked by an inmate at a central California prison suffered a fractured eye socket and a laceration requiring 17 stitches.
The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation says the assault happened as inmate Peter Matus was being escorted to his cell Tuesday at the state prison in Corcoran.
Officials say the 33-year-old inmate was immediately restrained and transferred to a restricted housing unit.
The guard was treated at a hospital and is recovering at home.

Matus was sentenced in 2013 to 50 years to life with the possibility of parole for first-degree murder.
Corcoran, located in the Central Valley about halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, houses about 3,000 inmates in facilities ranging from minimum to high security.
