STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — A former teacher in a northeast Mississippi school has been arrested on charges that he tried to entice a child into sexual conduct.

Local media report that Starkville police and a U.S. Marshals task force on Wednesday arrested Lacey McBeath, a 37-year-old Columbus man. Officials say he tried to get a child to meet him for sexual purposes and to produce images of sexual conduct.

McBeath was until recently a middle school teacher in Starkville. A spokeswoman says he is no longer employed by the Starkville-Oktibbeha (awk-TIHB’-ee-hah) school district.

McBeath was released on $50,000 bail and is scheduled to return to court Feb. 12. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer to speak on his behalf.
