ANNISTON, Ala. (AP) — The agency created to redevelop a former Army base in Alabama has sold the headquarters area for $2.3 million to a group that plans a $23 million renovation as an independent living complex.
The headquarters and four multi-story barracks are to be turned into 120 independent living apartments and other facilities including a clubhouse and fitness center, the McClellan Development Authority said Thursday.
Residents will also get priority access to assisted living and memory support units that opened a couple of years ago on the former base.
“One of our focuses is to try to make this area attractive for senior retirement living,” Robin Scott, executive director of the authority, said in an interview Friday. Other developments contributing to this goal include an 18-hole public golf course, a $4.5 million athletic center and a senior therapeutic center run by the city of Anniston, he said.

Bond sales are to finance the 10-acre (4-hectare) project, with the sale planned in January and renovation and construction to start in 2019, a news release said.
Fort McClellan, which opened in 1917 as an artillery range for National Guard units heading to World War I, closed in 2000.
Scott said about 5,200 acres (2,100 hectares) of the 10,400-acre (4,200-hectare) property are now back in use. That’s about 92 percent of the developed area, which already had roads and utilities; woods make up most of the remainder, he said.
