VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) — Firefighters from a neighboring Mississippi county filled Warren County firehouses so locals could say farewell to one of their own, who died in a fire at his own home.

Former volunteer fire captain Danny Cogan died Nov. 19 and was buried Friday. Firefighters from around Hinds County worked at various firehouses around Warren County during the funeral.

“It is what we do,” Utica fire Lt. Lauren Stubblefield told the Vicksburg Post , “We back each other up all the time. … It is part of what we do and it is part of watching out for one another and taking care of one another both on the fire ground and off the fire ground.”

Cogan had been a captain with Northeast Volunteer Fire Department, but stepped down a couple of months ago. Investgators said an accidental fire burned his home down. His funeral was in Rolling Fork.

“Danny was the guy that was typically always there,” said Culkin firefighter Chuck Tate. “He especially got involved with the junior firefighters and was a mentor to them and somebody who gave them guidance. He was a good guy.”

Eleven firefighters from various Hinds County Departments spread throughout Warren County along with multiple trucks ready to handle any calls that came their way.

“It is an honor to help out our brothers and sisters here in Warren County while they’re hurting. It is our way of paying tribute to the fallen,” Joey Jamison, the assistant chief in Raymond said.
