BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana residents displaced by August 2016 flooding and living in mobile homes provided by the federal government are getting a reprieve from large rental bills they were supposed to start paying in March.
Gov. John Bel Edwards’ administration said Wednesday that the Federal Emergency Management Agency is reducing the rental rates it had planned to charge.
FEMA had said the rates would range from $789 for a one-bedroom manufactured housing unit to $1,155 for a three-bedroom unit. Instead, people will only have to pay $50 a month through May 14, when the program is scheduled to end.
State officials had criticized the initially announced rental rates as complicating recovery for flood victims.
