ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) — A former superintendent of the state’s transportation department has been sentenced to seven years in prison for his role in an $11 million bribery scheme.

According to court documents, Anthony Willie and a co-conspirator awarded millions of dollars in snow removal contracts to four contractors who agreed to pay bribes equivalent to 5 to 10 percent of the contract value.

The snow removal scheme allegedly ran for more than five years.

Prosecutors say Willie and co-conspirator Kenneth Adams received $440,000 in bribes over the course of the scheme.

Willie was the former superintendent of the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Burke area headquarters.

The U.S. Attorney’s office for Virginia’s eastern district says the 55-year-old Culpeper man was sentenced Friday.
