Europe has had more than 2 million confirmed deaths from COVID-19, the World Health Organization said, as the global toll of the world’s most deadly infectious disease keeps rising.
The WHO published the figure a week after a report in which it estimated total direct and indirect deaths from COVID in the region at more than 3 million during 2020 and 2021.
That number is higher because it includes an estimate for unreported deaths and also people who suffered from other causes but couldn’t get medical treatment because hospitals were overrun.
President Joe Biden marked almost 1 million U.S. deaths from COVID-19 on Thursday by calling on lawmakers to provide fresh funding for testing and treatments.
