CUMBERLAND, R.I. (AP) — The Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence says it will close a parish in Cumberland because of a decline in the number of worshippers and the deterioration of the aging building.
The diocese said Thursday that St. Patrick Church will close and its congregation will merge with St. Aidan Parish, also in Cumberland.
The church, founded in 1861, had already shifted worship services to St. Aidan last year because of maintenance problems. The diocese estimates it would cost $1 million to repair structural damage, waters leaks and a broken heating system.
The number of churchgoers at St. Patrick had also dropped by about half in the past decade, from 1,450 families in 2007 to 700 last year.
