ARTESIA, N.M. (AP) — A boil-water advisory has been lifted and New Mexico environmental regulators say Artesia residents can again use water from the municipal water system and the Morningside Water Users Cooperative for drinking, bathing and cooking.

The advisory was issued Sept. 16 after bacteriological contamination that exceeded the maximum contaminant level for E. coli was found in water from the municipal system.

The advisory applied only to customers served by the Artesia municipal system and Morningside Water Users Cooperative and not to any other surrounding water systems or communities.

The department says the presence of E. coli in water indicates that the water may have been in contact with sewage or animal wastes, and could contain disease-causing organisms.
