BALTIMORE (AP) — The Port of Baltimore has set new cargo records, handling 10.7 million tons (247 million kilograms) of general cargo in 2017.
The Baltimore Sun reports the port also handled the most containers and autos in its history. This was the second year in a row the port has handled more than 10 million tons. General cargo including containers, auto and light trucks, farm equipment and other types increased by 7 percent from previous years.
The newspaper cites the Maryland Port Administration as saying the port’s state-owned public terminals also increased, setting a record of 803,999 of them moving across piers. Additionally, the port’s container volume jumped by 11 percent to a record 596,972 containers last year, prompting the state to expand the port for the first time in 30 years.
