GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina man has been arrested in a hit and run that killed a man over the weekend.

Greenville police spokeswoman Kristen Hunter said in a news release Sunday that 33-year-old Steven Jerome Keel has been charged with felony hit and run death and operating a vehicle without insurance.

Twenty-five-year-old Charles Benjamin Smith Jr. was killed when he was struck near the Pitt Greenville Airport early Saturday morning. Police said the driver left the scene.

Hunter said someone spotted a car with extensive front-end damage Sunday and called officers.

Police said Keel initially told officers he did not own the car. Officers with a search warrant found keys and paperwork for the vehicle in Keel’s apartment. It was not known if he has a lawyer yet.
