SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah (AP) — Authorities in South Salt Lake say a man fatally shot by police after he killed an elderly woman and critically injured her husband was the woman’s grandson.

Police on Monday identified the man who held the couple hostage as 44-year-old Abe Martinez and his grandmother as 89-year-old Rose Martinez.

The Deseret News reports Abe Martinez on Sunday told family members who were checking up on the couple that he was holding them hostage. Officers arrived to the home, a shot was fired out the window and a SWAT team was called to the scene.

Police say three officers “engaged” the suspect through a window. He was then shot and killed.

Police have not said how many officers fired their weapons.

The woman’s cause of death has not been released. Police have not identified the 71-year-old man who was critically injured.
