KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — An addiction recovery advocate who died in Tennessee is being remembered for her work to help others overcome addiction, including her role in a billboard campaign.
The Knoxville News Sentinel reports that 34-year-old Bethany “Bessy” Morse’s funeral was Friday in Tupelo, Mississippi. She died Feb. 2 at her home in Nashville. Friends say she died after experiencing several spells of hypoglycemia, or very low blood sugar.
Morse found recovery four years ago at Nashville’s Renewal House. In her advocacy work, she met with Tennessee and Mississippi lawmakers to offer firsthand accounts of the opioid crisis.
She was one of the first to offer her image for a Tennessee Overdose Prevention billboard campaign proclaiming “#WeDoRecover.” She became a statewide Narcan trainer to help spread the medication to prevent drug overdose deaths.
