Photographer: David Neiwert, Seattle Photo taken: May 11, off San Juan Island Photographer’s description: “A humpback whale calf breaches in Haro Strait, on the western side of San Juan Island, with the Olympic Mountains in the background; taken from my kayak. I used a Nikon D300 with a Nikon 70-300 lens and stayed very close to shore.” Katie’s critique: “Wow! An amazing moment to witness. Perfect timing. I love being able to see the spray coming off the whale and having the Olympic Mountains in the background. I wish the whale-watching boat wasn’t there, just to clean up the frame, but it adds an element of reality. Awesome photo.” Share your recent photo from around the Northwest.
