Photographer: Julia Rose Tranchina, Gig Harbor Photo taken: Feb. 9, 2016, in her Gig Harbor garden Photographer’s description: “Spring flowers and a bumblebee in my garden, taken with my new Nikon D5500.” Katie’s critique: “We get a lot of bumblebee submissions and this is probably my favorite that I’ve seen. I love the contrast between the yellow and purple. The tight shot allows us to see all that pollen (which is so cool!) and it creates a clean frame that doesn’t distract from the subject. The depth of field also helps with this. Gorgeous photo!” Share your recent photo from around the Northwest. Submit online at We judge the best and award a prize every December.
