It's a weekend of hot dance, hard cider and avant garde films around the region.
Need a quick getaway? It’s a weekend of hot dance, hard cider and avant garde films around the region. Here are three reasons to hit the road this weekend:
1. Oh-so-proper Victoria, B.C., peels off its white gloves and tosses its tiara for a celebration of African and Caribbean house dance, the city’s first Kizomba Semba Festival. According to the web site, “Kizomba is one of the most popular genres of dance and music created in Angola. Derived directly from Zouk music, sung generally in Portuguese, it is a genre of music with a romantic flow mixed with African rhythm.” Toto, I don’t think we’re in British Columbia anymore. Thursday-Sunday, March 19-22, classes with instructor Djks Vasco, Victoria West Community Centre, 521 Craigflower Road, Victoria, and other venues; classes $20 and up.
2. Just when you thought Portland was awash in craft beer, along comes a tsunami of cider. Northwest Cider Association invites you to the Cider Rite of Spring this Saturday, to sample 15 cidermakers’ best quaffs made from apples, pears and who knows what else (we’ve seen labels listing hops, apricots, peaches, ginger and even pineapple). Come thirsty. Noon-5 p.m. March 21, Tiffany Center, 1410 S.W. Morrison St., Portland; $25 advance/$30 at the door, includes glass and 10 tastings.
3. Are they bored with Bavaria? Leavenworth is going a little Hollywood — or slightly Sundance-ish. This weekend the mountain town that loves dirndls and lederhosen hosts Vox Docs Film Festival, showcasing the best documentaries of the year and titles that have been sweeping “best of festival” awards around the world. Also: guest speakers and a showcase of locally produced short films. Proceeds will help launch Icicle Creek Center for the Arts’ new Youth Film Program. Friday-Saturday, March 20-21, Snowy Owl Theater, Icicle Creek Center for the Arts, 7409 Icicle Road, Leavenworth; $10-$15 per film.
