Times’ readers praise and lament people and things around us.

RAVE AND RANT Rave to everyone not attached to electronic devices, making eye contact, saying hello … thank you! Rant to people with their heads down texting, scrolling, disconnected. Others have to watch where we’re walking and dodge you, since you’re not paying attention to where you’re going. Put the phone down!

RANT AND RAVE Rant to me for forgetting to look for pedestrians while I was driving through a residential intersection. I was looking at traffic and didn’t see a lady stepping off the curb. Rave to pedestrians like her, who take responsibility for their own safety when drivers aren’t paying attention. There are many more people, cars and pedestrians alike, out on these sunny days, so everyone please pay attention and be safe!

RANT AND RAVE Rant to me for acting like a jerk when I inadvertently tried to enter a Mariners game carrying a knife. Rave to the Safeco Field staff for being patient, courteous and humorous, including granting me “amnesty,” holding the knife for me to pick up on my way out. They treated me better than I deserved.

RAVE To the good Samaritan truck driver who alerted me to an impending tire blow on I-5. The tread had completely disengaged from the rim, and this road angel installed the emergency spare. Kudos to safe and alert drivers like him.

RANT To the person who keyed my car while I was visiting my daughter, who’s been in the hospital for 52 days. Another day while I was visiting, someone broke into my house and stole everything of value. It’s said bad things come in threes. Keying my car was the third; hopefully only good things are coming my way.

RANT AND RAVE Rant to the brewpub sidewalk patrons who ignored my brother when he hobbled up with crunched bicycle, torn clothing, fresh wounds and spinning head. Rave to the couple walking by 20 minutes later who stopped to help him get to the ER. Thanks to your concern and compassion and some stitches, he’s going to heal up OK and drink beer elsewhere.

RAVE To my neighbors’ beautiful front yards. Walking past your gardens is a song to my senses!

RANT To the idiotic couple who grabbed a duckling from its family and ran around shrieking and laughing at the stressed, scared mother duck following them. Yes, you put the duckling down; still, it was an ugly scene.

RAVE To Metro bus drivers who give everyone a friendly greeting, including to those who aren’t responsive. Many passengers are disabled or needy, and some are disoriented and argumentative. Drivers on my frequent trips handle difficult and delicate situations with helpful kindness.
