Weekend warriors: Bill Gobie and Lorene Adachi

Project: A grape arbor

Cost: $2,000

Time spent: Four days to build, two weeks to price materials and arrange delivery.

Details: The couple wanted an arbor to add architectural interest to their West Seattle home and provide a shady area for outdoor living. They chose high-grade cedar beams joined by steel connectors, which they painted red to provide an accent as the cedar weathers.

Lesson learned: Hammer strikes damaged the red paint on the steel connectors. Next time? Screws.
