Cocktail author Paul Clarke came to reporter Tan Vinh’s house to mix drinks and discuss how to build your cocktail repertoire. Here are his instructions on how to make a Whiskey Sour, from his book “The Cocktail Chronicles.”

Whiskey Sour

2 oz. rye whiskey or bourbon

¾ oz. lemon juice

½ oz. simple syrup

¼ oz. egg white (optional)

Shake with ice to chill; strain into chilled sour or cocktail glass, or strain into ice-filled rocks glass. Variation: Float ½ oz. of dry red wine atop the finished drink to make a New York Sour.
