For those keeping score in the bananas game of the Seattle-area industry, 41-plus new restaurants have opened around the city and the Eastside since we last tallied up closures in August. Here’s the story on the seven shutdowns in the interim, plus info on three places for sale — and, in case you missed it, what’s going to happen to the Sullivan’s Steakhouse space downtown (spoiler: Ethan Stowell).


Contadino on Capitol Hill is no more, just six months after replacing Ernest Loves Agnes, which itself lasted only a year and change. Chef Brian Clevenger, of Vendemmia and Raccolto, attributes Contadino’s downfall to “a difference in vision” with partner Jason Lajeunesse. No word on whether Lajeunesse will try a third time to fill the former Kingfish Cafe space. Meanwhile, Clevenger is working on opening what will be his own third restaurant, as yet unnamed, on Eastlake across from the KIRO building.

Blue Moon Burgers in South Lake Union has closed. As you may recall, after calls for a boycott on social media in June, the owner of the local burger chain admitted that he had participated in a racist text exchange involving employees, calling it “a single — but nonetheless deplorable — failure” on his part. The sign in the window at the SLU Blue Moon indicates that the closure is unrelated, saying the lease is up and that the building is going to be torn down.

Blackboard Bistro in West Seattle is gone after seven years, citing “circumstances at home” and saying “parting is such sweet sorrow… we have had such a great time and been able to live a dream.” Awww. The space won’t stay vacant for long — West Seattle Blog reports that Srivilai Thai Cuisine is moving in.

Munch Cafe in Greenwood has closed, though Eater Seattle reports that it, too, will get a new restaurant-occupant, with a sign promising “Coming soon! Japanese sushi and food.”

Mo & Lu Pasta in Lake City, a neighborhood favorite (and raved about by my colleague Tan Vinh), is no more, with the phone number disconnected and no information available.

Fu Man Dumpling House in Bitter Lake has shut down “with deep sadness and heavy hearts” after 12 years. The owners say they’re going back to Taiwan for a time to visit family, but may someday open another restaurant under the same name hereabouts. And fans, take note: They promise that their garlic sauce will be available through their website soon.

BOKA downtown has closed after 11 years of Bold Original Kitchen Artistry (yes, really), but patrons of Hotel 1000 shan’t go hungry: The space has already soft-reopened as All Water Seafood & Oyster Bar, with executive chef Scott Mickelson still at the helm.


Anchovies & Olives and next-door sibling Bar Cotto on Capitol Hill are for sale. An announcement says that Ethan Stowell Restaurants’ “focus has shifted to other concepts on Capitol Hill and across the city,” meaning Stowell’s two other Italian places in the neighborhood — Rione XIII and Tavolata II, both within about a half-mile — and 12 other restaurants throughout Seattle. But it’s two steps back, one big step forward for Stowell: He’s taking over the Sullivan’s Steakhouse space downtown, opening a capacious, Stowellian Italian place called Cortina there early next year.

The Ruins on Lower Queen Anne is for sale, according to the Puget Sound Business Journal. After 24 years, the private dining club will have its last members-only hurrah on January 2, 2018, the PSBJ reports, going on to detail some of the club’s lions-of-Seattle-society members (Francia Russell and Kent Stowell, Ginger and Barry Ackerley, Virginia and Bagley Wright) and its elaborate decor (including a life-sized animatronic elephant).
