Watch the video for step-by-step instructions from cocktail author Paul Clarke.
Cocktail author Paul Clarke came to reporter Tan Vinh’s house to mix drinks and discuss how to build your cocktail repertoire. Here are his instructions on how to make an Old Fashioned, from his book “The Cocktail Chronicles.”
Old Fashioned
Ingredients
2 oz. bourbon or rye whiskey
1 sugar cube or 1 teaspoon superfine sugar or 2 teaspoons simple syrup
2 dashes Angostura bitters (or any bitters, really)
Method
Place sugar cube in glass and soak with bitters and a few drops of water; crush to paste with wooden muddler. You can use loose sugar instead, or simple syrup (skip the added water if the latter), but the ritual contributes to the experience. Add whiskey and stir to mix and dissolve sugar; add ice and stir again to chill. Garnish.
