One of the best winter drinks I’ve had in recent months is the Calvados Old Fashioned at Damn The Weather, the newish bar in Pioneer Square. Have you tried it?
The cocktail is clean and robust. Even better, it’s easy to recreate at home, the perfect drink by the fireplace or while watching the Daily Show.
Below is the recipe courtesy of Damn the Weather owner/bartender Bryn Lumsden.
If you’ve ever had an Old Fashioned, it’s likely with bourbon or rye. But this apple drink really sings with the cinnamon notes from the Angostura bitters. I think the cocktail works fine with two supporting players: Angostura bitters and simple syrup.

But at his place, Lumsden adds a dash of cardamom bitters to round out the drink.
Calvados Old Fashioned
2 oz. Calvados (Château du Breuil brand is what Damn the Weather uses)
1/4 oz. simple syrup
3 dashes Angostura bitters
1 dash Scrappy’s Cardamom bitters
Stir and strain over ice, spritz with lemon peel then discard. Garnish with freshly grated nutmeg
