An unexpected discovery in a San Francisco fabric store led to this unique costume for the TV series “Outlander.”

Everyone’s watching “Outlander” for the costumes, right? This amazing dress, created by the show’s costume designer Terry Dresbach, has a great story, told on Dresbach’s blog: At Britex, the legendary fabric store in San Francisco, a salesman brought up this fabric from the basement to show Dresbach, who was shopping there. A customer, passing by, admired it and said, “Have you seen a show called ‘Outlander’? That looks like a fabric they would use.” Bowing to inevitability, Dresbach bought the fabric, schemed and pieced with her staff to make a dress (only 12 meters were available; 15 were needed), whipped up a matching hat and gloves — and here’s the result, a long way from San Francisco. It is, Dresbach says, star Caitriona Balfe’s favorite costume this season. “Outlander” airs Saturdays on STARZ.
