Ready to step into 2016 with style? The runways have been previewing which shoe trends will be leaving their stylish footprints on 2016.

Sneakers are still trending (yay!), but they’re getting fancy upgrades. Designers, such as Rag & Bone, Tommy Hilfiger and Alexander Wang, have flaunted glammed-up kicks that feature open backs, luxe materials and fine details.

We’ll also see a rush of ballet-inspired ankle ribbons (a softer alternative to gladiator sandals), an onslaught of metallics (especially silver) and pretty details such as scalloped edging on flats.

Here are six hot styles for 2016 that will take you through the rest of winter and into the sunny seasons to come.

Commuter boots

February and March can present extra sloshy work commutes. Conquer the commuter challenge with a boot that will keep your feet dry on your way into the office, but still look professional enough for the workday. The Jeffrey Campbell Clima Chelsea Rainboots ($55 at Nordstrom) are waterproof, and able handle the rain, snow and slush. But the shiny patent finish and block heel make them a perfect pairing for work trousers or a dress-and-tights combo.

Think of metallics as a new neutral. They pair beautifully with spring’s pastels, but also complement jewel tones and give a shimmer to more muted earthy colors. The runways are especially favoring silver this year, so you can expect to see the popular metallic on pumps, slides and sandals. The London Rebel Silver Barnaby Brogues (on sale for $55 at add metallic pep to a menswear classic.

Combine two of the year’s best trends in one shoe: pointed toes with ballet-inspired lace-ups. The Steve Madden Lecrew ($70 at does just that, with delicate laces that play peek-a-boo on your ankles. Pair them with looser-fitting boyfriend jeans with rolled-up cuffs or, come spring, with a fit-and-flare dress.

Luxe sneakers

The athleisure trend — athletic wear that is a fancy enough to be worn outside the gym — shows no sign of slowing. Pair those high-end yoga pants and slogan sweatshirts with some glamorous sneakers, such as the G by Guess Opall11 Mid-Top Sneaker ($45 at The sporty kicks get a glamorous dose of gold glitter while remaining a little bit rugged. We love them with elastic ankle sweats and a V-neck tee for the ultimate cool-girl combo.

Scalloped flats

Give your feet a break from heels in a pair of flats that are just as pretty. There are lots of new embellishments on flats this year, including color-blocking and tassels. Among the best looks is scalloped trim along the foot opening that adds an interesting detail. The Born Allie Scalloped Ballet Flats ($118 at come in three colors of leather with a soft rubber sole.

Riding boots

Tall riding boots stay in style year after year, making them a great investment. The Frye Melissa Button Boots ($300 at have a classic, slightly Western look in super-soft vintage leather.  Wear them over your favorite skinny jeans with a flannel shirt and puffer vest for the perfect winter outfit.
