Coffee and string cheese and a whole lot of communication: A day in the work life of Nicci Valiquette.
Meet Nicci Valiquette, chief of staff for OAC Services, a project management company in Seattle.
What do you do? I’m the chief of staff at OAC Services. As a project management firm that deals in construction management and forensic architecture and engineering, OAC works to design, build and improve where people live, work, learn and play. I am lucky enough to manage our marketing, HR, IT, special projects and office admin teams.
What’s a typical day like? A mishmash of meetings, coffee, snacks (we’ve added string cheese to our snack fridge, and let me tell you, it was the best decision ever) and more meetings. Our operations team meets frequently every day since we have a huge list of projects to tackle to keep up with the growth we are experiencing as a firm. We are constantly working to improve our employees’ environment at OAC because that is super important to us. More specifically, we work on projects such as opening new offices, creating staffing plans, improving the existing tools and systems we have in place, implementing world-class onboarding and training programs, and improving the effectiveness of our internal and external communications. It’s insanely fun!
What’s the best part of the job? Firstly, it’s the people. We have some of the most brilliant and talented people on our team, and it’s a blast getting to work with them every day. We’ve won four “best places to work” awards in the past two years, which really says something about our culture. Secondly, it’s being a part of OAC’s incredible growth. As we grow, we’re always utilizing new, cutting-edge productivity and collaborative technology to stay on the same page across disparate teams and clients. For example, use of things like the Beam — a mobile telepresence robot that lets us meet with others “in person” from anywhere in the world — help us truly be in more than one place at the same time, getting more done every day!
What surprises people about your work? If an operations team is doing their job correctly, it will be somewhat of a mystery to people as to what they do. The sign of an incredible operations team is that you don’t see the logistics, planning, meetings and overall effort that it takes to keep the company running and positioned for growth. Our job is to get it done and make it look like a breeze!
