Q: We’re building a new small home and it will be our last house. The kitchen is right next to our downstairs bathroom, and I would like the colors in the bathroom to match the kitchen sink. We have no plans to remodel this home while we live there. What are some safe choices for fixtures that will stay in style for a long time?

A: In my experience with changing out-of-date fixtures, I’ve noticed very dark and vibrant fixture colors seem to come in and out of style more than lighter mainstream hues.

In all fairness, many trendy kitchens go with these impact colors knowing that down the road, updates will be done when needed. But, if you’re looking for colors that stay in style for a long time, white and off-white are safe choices and easy to match.

Recently, a newer color has joined the ranks of these long-lasting hues: light gray, sometimes called “ice gray.”
