★★★½  Big Hero 6 (PG): Japanese anime meets Disney animation in this Oscar-winning tale of a 14-year-old boy (voiced by Ryan Potter) and his hug-dispensing potbellied robot (Scott Adsit).

★★★  “Whiplash” (R): Damien Chazelle’s jazz drama is a showcase for the two actors at its center: Miles Teller, as a 19-year-old drummer at an East Coast music conservatory, and J.K. Simmons as his sadistic teacher. “Whiplash” received three Academy Awards: for supporting actor (Simmons), sound mixing and film editing.

★★★  “Beyond the Lights” (PG-13): Writer/director Gina Prince-Bythewood (“Love and Basketball”) brings Gugu Mbatha-Raw (“Belle”) to the forefront as an R&B singer struggling to manage her fame. Nate Parker plays the L.A. cop she falls for. The film was nominated for best original song (“Grateful”).

★½  “Horrible Bosses 2” (R): The clueless guys (Jason Sudeikis, Jason Bateman and Charlie Day) are back, this time getting screwed by an evil investor (Christoph Waltz).
