The Seafair Milk Carton Derby, a popular local tradition celebrating its 45th year at Green Lake, showcases creativity and engineering by teams of all ages racing human-powered boats made primarily of milk cartons.
Milk carton races at Green Lake, seafood in Ballard, parades and festivals fill this weekend with summer fun in Seattle and around the region.
The Seafair Milk Carton Derby Saturday, July 11, a popular local tradition celebrating its 45th year at Green Lake, showcases creativity and engineering by teams of all ages racing human-powered boats made primarily of milk cartons. Registration is open until 10 a.m. Saturday and about 25 of the 100 crafts participating register on the day of the event, so if you happen to a have a LOT of milk cartons on hand there’s still time to float your boat. Seafair’s website has complete information, including boatbuilding plans.
Most folks come as spectators to enjoy the day with kids’ activities, food, stand-up paddleboard races and visits by the Seafair Pirates, clowns, Miss Seafair and the Seafair Princesses at one of Seattle’s most popular parks.

Wallingford hosts another longtime tradition, the Wallingford Family Parade, Saturday, July 11. The longest-running Seafair parade celebrates its 66th anniversary with a “Route 66” theme and marching bands, drill teams and kids in costume who are welcome to join in the day of the parade; no preregistration necessary.

Another big event in Seattle this weekend, Ballard SeafoodFest Saturday and Sunday, July 11 and 12, features music, arts and crafts vendors, kids’ activities, Festi-Bowl skateboard competition, BeerFest beer garden and a variety of food vendors.
