Stephen Colbert, Trevor Noah and Jimmy Kimmel had a lot to say Tuesday night about political developments. Maybe the president thinks he's still on "The Celebrity Apprentice," Kimmel said.

President Donald Trump once again gave late-night talk-show hosts some new material when he fired FBI Director James Comey, who had been heading the investigation into allegations that Russia interfered with last year’s presidential election.

The unceremonious dumping of Comey — whose announcement in late October that the bureau was reopening its investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails was partly blamed for her loss — struck comedians as odd.

Trevor Noah of “The Daily Show” expressed outrage over Trump’s justification for Comey’s firing and called it a “gangster excuse.”

“Do you understand the excuse Trump is giving? Trump is basically saying he’s doing this because of what Comey did to Hillary. That is the most gangster excuse. Trump is going, ‘I’m doing this to clear my good friend, Crooked Hillary. Because James Comey, folks, clearly just wanted to ‘lock her up, lock her up, lock her up,’ ” he said.

Noah also feigned shock at realizing another implication of the dismissal.

“Wow, Trump fired the FBI director! Like, you can’t just fire the FBI director. I mean if he’s gone, who’s going to investigate Russia’s ties to …… ohhhhhhh!”

On “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert referenced the belief that Comey had hit a home run for Trump, and said, “That shows no gratitude at all. Did Trump forget about the Hillary emails that Comey talked about?”

In his monologue for “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Kimmel appeared to be trying to puzzle out Trump’s motives.

“He fired James Comey, the director of the FBI, which is kind of like O.J. firing Judge Ito halfway through the trial,” Kimmel said, referencing the murder trial of former football great O.J. Simpson.

Kimmel then appeared to figure it out.

Oh, Kimmel said, “This is the kind of thing reality TV hosts do. They fire someone every week. Maybe that’s what happened. He thinks he’s still on ‘The Celebrity Apprentice.’ It was between James Comey and Meatloaf, and well, the Loaf won again.”
